FAQs – GPSN First Wave Scholarship Program

  1. Am I allowed to change my GPSN First Wave medical practice?

Due to the short duration of the scholarship this would not normally be encouraged except in special circumstances.

  1. Am I able to defer my scholarship?

We are unable to offer deferred scholarships at this stage.

  1. What if I can’t attend the First Wave Orientation Workshop to be held in Perth or Melbourne?

Acceptance into the scholarship program is subject to attendance at this workshop. If your circumstances change after application please email firstwave@gpra.org.au at the earliest opportunity so that we may be able to give this opportunity to another candidate.

  1. Am I required to attend the regional training provider Basic Registrar Workshops?

If you are a recipient of the First Wave Indigenous Health Training Scholarship in Western Australia, you are required to attend a cultural workshop. For all other students, workshops are optional and organised at the discretion of the training provider. You are encouraged to attend if workshops are made available as they will provide a great learning opportunity.

  1. Am I insured during my GPSN First Wave Scholarship?

Yes. Our founding sponsor, MDA National, is kindly providing each scholarship recipient with free medical indemnity insurance* for the duration of their studies.

  1. Who do I contact if I have any questions or concerns?

Please email us at firstwave@gpra.org.au with all queries. For emergencies please call us at 1300 131 198.

  1. Am I a paid employee of the First Wave medical practice at which I am placed?

No, you are not an employee of the medical practice where you are placed.

  1. As a scholarship recipient, what am I allowed to do and not do?

Given your level of experience, you will not have done a great deal of clinical work. Your involvement should be largely observational, with any clinical or procedural activities done under strict supervision. Suitability of tasks should be decided by your clinical placement supervisor on a case-by-case basis and with consideration of your individual skills in mind. You should not be allowed to do any unsupervised work.

  1. What will be the location of my clinical placement sessions?

Most First Wave students complete their clinical placements in urban or outer-metropolitan medical practices while some complete their placements in regional medical practices. Locations of placements are detailed on individual university application forms, with students advised of exact locations on selection into the program.

  1. How many scholarships will be running during the year?

We will be running more than 80 scholarships during the 2011-2012 academic year.

  1. Can I apply more than once?

Yes, you can.

  1. I am an international student, am I eligible to apply?

No. You need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to be eligible to apply for this scholarship. New Zealand citizens are also eligible to apply.

  1. Why is the GPSN First Wave Scholarship program not offered to students at my university?

GPRA and the GPSN are endeavouring to make the program available to first and second year medical students at all 20 medical schools in Australia for the 2012-2013 academic year.
