Eligibility

Students applying for the GPSN First Wave Scholarship Program will be assessed against the following eligibility criteria. An applicant must:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited Australian medical course at one of the participating universities.  
  • Be in their first or second year of study (or third or fourth year at one of the Victorian universities).
  • Be able to commit to undertaking clinical placement sessions as follows: Clinical Scholarship – six sessions in four months; Academic Scholarship – four clinical sessions in four months; Academic students also required to complete work on a general practice-related research project.
  • Be able to attend the GPSN First Wave Scholarship Orientation Workshop (expenses paid).

Applicants must demonstrate in their written application:

  • Sound reasons for applying for the scholarship.
  • An understanding of the GPSN First Wave Scholarship.
  • An understanding  of the benefits of participating in the scholarship.
  • An ability to participate in and learn in a clinical setting.
  • A willingness and enthusiasm to learn about general practice.

Selection of Students

Interested medical students must submit a formal written application which includes:

  • Applicant details.
  • Preference for scholarship type (clinical or academic) (if both types available at that university).
  • Two referees (professional or academic only).
  • Reasons for applying & program expectations.

It should be noted that academic scholarships are not available at all locations.

Submitted applications are reviewed by a panel of selectors which typically includes two or more of the following persons; a representative from the relevant Regional Training Provider, a GPRA representative, a GPSN representative and/or a staff member from the respective University Department of General Practice. Selected finalists are interviewed to determine overall performance against the criteria. All applicants are advised of the outcome of their application in writing.  

Successful applicants are notified directly and invited to attend an orientation workshop.
